Did you think you may be pregnant? What should you do?

Pregnancy tests of various brands and prices are available in almost every grocery store and pharmacy. How do they work?

How Exactly Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

Pregnancy tests detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone the placenta produces during pregnancy. HCG levels start to build after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall

There are two kinds of tests: urine and blood. Urine tests use a urine sample to indicate if hCG is present. If using an at-home pregnancy test, waiting for the exact time on the test instructions is critical for accurate results.

Blood tests are rarer than urine tests because they are expensive and require visiting a medical office or lab. However, they are slightly more sensitive and can detect small amounts of hCG.

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

Some pregnancy tests claim they can deliver accurate results earlier than a missed period. While this can be true with some sensitive urine tests, they also risk giving a false-negative result, meaning your test says negative when you are pregnant.

It takes time for hCG to rise to detectable levels. That’s why the Mayo Clinic recommends taking a test one day after you miss your period for the most accurate results.

Waiting until that time can increase your chances of having enough hCG in your urine to trigger a positive test. Taking a test too early or not following the instructions are two reasons for false-negative test results.
