An ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to create images of structures inside your body. During pregnancy, an ultrasound can provide helpful information as you seek clarity about your next steps.

What Can an Ultrasound Tell Me About My Pregnancy?
While a pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, an ultrasound is used to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and confirm whether the pregnancy is developing. This is referred to as pregnancy viability, meaning whether a heartbeat is present or if a miscarriage has occurred. About 10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and many early losses happen before a woman even realizes she is pregnant.
Additionally, an ultrasound can identify the location of the pregnancy. In some cases, a pregnancy may develop outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), which requires medical care. An ultrasound can help identify whether further evaluation is needed.
What to Expect During an Ultrasound Appointment
During a limited ultrasound appointment, you can expect a respectful and comfortable experience. The sonographer applies a clear, water-based gel to your abdomen, and a small handheld device, called a transducer, is gently moved over the abdomen. This device sends sound waves into the body and records the returning echoes, which are translated into images on a screen.
In a very early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended to obtain clearer images.
Anderson House now offers ultrasounds in our Uvalde office.
